“The Big Church”
“For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.” 1 Corinthians 12:12
As we start the new school year, University Circle will welcome students, faculty, staff, researchers, doctors, artists, and professionals from all over the world to co-habituate in this place with the local members of our community. Many different cultures, identities, worldviews, political positions, and life experiences all come together into one neighborhood; our neighborhood.
We are uniquely positioned in this place and at this time to be the campus church. We are called to support not only the religious journey of the students who identify as Presbyterians or Christians but to serve as the Big Church. This is God’s church that is governed by unconditional love that is given freely and without expectation of anything in return. The big church is the cosmic sanctuary, bigger and broader than we can understand. It is a place where all are welcome to dwell as equals, where everyone belongs, and where people can find the deep connection with other people, with the natural world, and with God.
Join me this year in being part of God’s Church. A church that welcomes the stranger who has the courage to come into the sanctuary on a Sunday morning, whether they are wearing a suit and tie or their P.Js. Or, join me in stepping outside of our building and meeting people where they are and expressing Christ’s unwavering compassion no matter who we encounter. Join me in putting our faith into action, here in University Circle, and show to each member of our neighborhood that they too are a beloved child of God and that together we are all members of the Body of Christ.
