Service of Tenebrae
You are invited to a Service of Tenebrae on Maundy Thursday, March 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. The service will include open communion.
The ancient service of Tenebrae, which dates from the eighth century, commemorates the death of Christ. It is a dramatic retelling of the Passion story that impresses one with the magnitude of Jesus' sacrifice.
Tenebrae is the Latin word meaning "darkness". The triangular candle stand used during this service is called the "hearse". The center candle represents Christ, the light of the world. During the service, the other candles will be gradually extinguished, reminding us of the desertion of the disciples and friends. The Great Bourdon Bell will be tolled for each year of Christ's life.
Music by Bruckner and Durufle' will be provided by the Covenant choir and soloists.
Good Friday Service
A Good Friday service in the Taize tradition will be held March 21 at 11:40 a.m. in Christ Chapel. The service will be led by Laury Larson and Eileen Vizcaino. Music will be by Ginny Kallay, guitar; Roberta Baker, piano; and Sarah Maxwell, flute. The campus community is invited to participate.
