The Church of the Covenant Mission Study 2003

Renewing the Future of the Covenant for Ministry and Mission

In the fall of 2003, the Church of the Covenant completed a "Mission Study." A Mission Study is the Presbyterian equivalent of a strategic plan. The process involves determining where we are and where we want to be at the end of a specified period. For this Mission Study we selected three to five years. Here are some of the highlights and Ministry Initiatives that developed from this study. For more on the Study or to become involved with a Ministry Initiative, please send your request to secretary1@core.com.

Core Values

A core value is a basic principle or belief.  It is “how we do business.”  Our core values are not something we wish to be, but what we are and what is actually lived out in the life and ministry of our congregation.  The order in which core values are listed does not reflect priority.

*      Strong pastoral leadership linked to strong lay leadership drawn from the entire congregation.

*      Prayer as a foundation for each of our individual lives, and for our lives in community.

*      Joyful celebration of worship and appreciation for the beauty manifest in all God’s creations.

*      Respect for the values and traditions we have inherited from our forbearers.

*      Responsible stewardship of the resources with which we have been entrusted.

*      Care and compassion for one another, and for our neighbors in the community, the nation
 and world.

*      Education of children, youth and adults for our lives as ministers.

*      Openness to all varieties of opinion, with civility towards those of differing opinions and beliefs.

*      Diversity and inclusivity in fellowship and in leadership.

*      Initiative in seeking ecumenical/interreligious relationships.

*      Commitment to social justice, inspiring action towards constructive social change.

*      Renewal, reformation and transformation - embracing change as we seek to understand and respond to God’s call.

Ministry Initiatives
(3-5 Years - 2003-2008)

A ministry initiative is a broad ministry activity.  It is in carrying out each initiative that we will live into the vision of the Covenant.  The ministry initiatives include both new activities for The Church of the Covenant as well as the redevelopment or expansion of something that we are already doing to make it more effective or increase the vitality, energy and purpose of the activity.  Initiatives build on Covenant’s heritage and present traditions of superb preaching and music, social justice, and mission.

Internal Ministry Initiatives

Internal ministry initiatives focus on The Church of the Covenant as a community of the faithful.  The internal ministry initiatives address how we can become a more welcoming community, including a focus on youth and expanded worship opportunities; empowering members and participants for ministry in their daily lives, and fully involving members in the life of the church.  Additional initiatives address structural shifts, such as examining the role of Deacons and prioritizing programs within the budgeting process.

a)      The Church of the Covenant, through the efforts of the congregation and staff, will be a welcoming community for all members, participants and visitors.

b)      The Church of the Covenant will be a church that is attractive to youth, provides for spiritual growth, and welcomes youth participation throughout the life of the church.

c)      The Church of the Covenant will provide expanded worship opportunities.

d)      The Church of the Covenant will equip and empower members and participants for ministry in their daily lives.

e)      The Church of the Covenant will explore better ways to involve members (including new members) and participants into the life of the church.

f)        The Church of the Covenant will redefine the role of the Deacons as leaders in the church, as it relates to establishing a welcoming inclusive home and expressing Christ’s love in the community.

g)      The Church of the Covenant will prioritize programs within its budgeting process

External Ministry Initiatives

External ministry initiatives focus on the world beyond our doors, beginning in University Circle and expanding to our local community and global mission partners.

a)      The Church of the Covenant, in collaboration with our neighbors, will provide programs based on need, with a special focus on working with University Circle institutions.

b)      The Church of the Covenant will be a welcoming home for college students, providing spiritual, intellectual, emotional and social support.

c)      The Church of the Covenant will sustain, strengthen and expand our relationship with global partners

d)      The Church of the Covenant will be an effective voice in the community on social and political issues.

e)      The Church of the Covenant will carry our message to the community in new and creative ways.

f)        The Church of the Covenant will enhance our local neighbors’ knowledge and appreciation of The Church of the Covenant
